28 Nov 2005 - School meals - The 'Dot' choice system

November 2005

Dear Parents

School meals - The 'Dot' choice system

At Orchard Lea Infant School we are always striving to make improvements, which we hope will be beneficial to both children and parents alike.

With this in mind we will be introducing, at the start of the Spring term in January, a new system, allowing your child to choose, on a daily basis, the main course of their school lunch. We feel that this will benefit the children by encouraging them to be independent ...etc

For the first time, as a parent, you will know that, once ordered, your child will receive the meal of their choice, whether they are the first or the last to collect their lunch, and hopefully this will avoid disappointment. However as this is a brand new system for the school, we would encourage you to look at the menu at home with your child, and discuss which meal they would prefer.

When they come in to school, they will then be able to make their meal choice easily and swiftly. You will of course, receive the usual menu from HC3S, prior to the end of this term. We will also endeavour to place menus, near the doors, where your child enters the school in the morning, so you can have a look, with your child before they come independently into school. We would also ask that you remind all children on a daily basis of their lunch arrangements, as they often forget!

When your child enters their classroom, their teaching assistant ascertain if your child is having a hot lunch, and will help them to select a red or green ticket and place it in named pocket. The red ticket denotes the 'meat' choice, and the green ticket denotes the 'vegetarian' option. The children will have a menu in the classroom, and the teaching assistant will give help with reading it, if needed.

The meal choices are then relayed by the office to the kitchen, who will cook the meals to order.

At lunchtime, the supervisory assistants will place a coloured red or green dot sticker on the collar of children having a hot school lunch, and the children will be served with their choice of meal.

A word of thanks to all parents who currently help enormously by sending in lunch money for the whole week, on a Monday, in a sealed envelope bearing their child?s name, class and days on which meals are required. This is such a help because the children often insist on asking for a hot lunch, on a day that parents haven't requested one, because they don't fancy their packed lunch or their friend is having a hot lunch!!! This often results in having to do some time consuming detective work, and hunting for lunch boxes. Please could I request that all lunchboxes are clearly named on the outside. We often have several children in the same class with the same design of lunchbox, and naming the boxes is vital.

I do hope that you will help us to ensure the smooth running of this system, which will benefit your children.

Please find overleaf a summary of the new system. However please do not hesitate to contact the school office if you have any queries.

Yours sincerely
