ANTI- BULLYING POLICY & BEHAVIOUR POLICY

Orchard Lea Infant School

ANTI- BULLYING POLICY

Rationale:

At Orchard Lea Infant School, we believe that everyone has the same rights of freedom from all forms of harassment.

We start from the premise that, bullying is totally unacceptable.

Aims:

Children are encouraged to treat others as they would wish to be treated themselves.

We wish to assure victims of bullying that there is some measure of redress, whilst helping the bully to see the error of their ways.

The policy is positive rather than punitive; it seeks to raise awareness of issues involved in harassment, and is based on trust between staff and pupils.

Procedures:

  • Reports of bullying to be brought to the attention of the Head Teacher, or, in her absence, the Deputy Head Teacher.

  • The Head Teacher will then meet with bullied child to determine concerns and information about the incident.

  • With permission from the bullied child, the Head Teacher will then meet with the bully/bullies to resolve the situation. This is done by explaining that another child is unhappy and that this cannot continue and needs to be put right. The Head Teacher will try, wherever possible, to draw up a plan of action. The plan of action is then shared with the bullied child, who is urged to return to a teacher, should the plan not work.

  • The Head Teacher informs any other staff who need to be aware of the plan and action taken and monitors the situation.

  • All parties are encouraged to "tell a teacher" should any other problems arise.

  • Parents of all parties involved may be informed at any point of this process should this be appropriate.

Orchard Lea Infant School

BEHAVIOUR POLICY

Rationale:

The vast majority of our children are co-operative, polite and well motivated.

Our school is a place where every individual is respected and everyone can feel safe and protected.

Aims:

As a school we aim to;

·         Develop in children a sense of self-discipline and an acceptance of responsibility for their own actions.

·         Create a caring community.

·         Encourage mutual respect between all members of our community.

·         Promote a sense of responsibility and concern for the environment.

·         Foster tolerance towards and consideration of everyone.

·         Enable children to positively meet challenges and make decisions.

Procedures:

All children and members of our school community are expected to abide by our Orchard Lea School Apples.  The apples tell us that we should try to:

*       Keep the Golden Rules on our Classroom Charters

*       Be polite and sensible

*       Listen to each other

*       Look after our things

*       Be kind and gentle

*       Be friendly and helpful

*       Work hard

Our expectations are expressed within our Classroom Charters which are jointly drawn up with the children.

A model example of a Classroom Charter would be:

*      We sit properly at all times.

*      We put our hand up when we want to speak.

*      We listen and keep our hands still.

*      We keep the classroom tidy and look after our own things.

*      We behave sensibly and are polite to each other.

*      We line up sensibly and quietly.

Expectations are also identified within our Home School Agreement.  This is signed by all parents and children before starting school.  The section relating to the child contains the following “promises”:

·         Be kind and think of others

·         Always do our best

·         Be good

·         Always say please and thank you

·         Be sensible

Valuing Appropriate Behaviour.

Every attempt will be made to reward acceptable behaviour.  This is done in a variety of ways, such as through the use of:

·         Golden Time.

·         Moving name/peg onto the wow face/shiny star.

·         Smile Award Assembly, Certificates, Assemblies.

·         Classroom stickers/smart circles.

·         Dinner time stickers.

·         Praise.

·         Quiet individual word.

·         Celebration of children’s work through display.

·         Assemblies.

·         Increased responsibility.

·         Reporting successes to parents.

·         Sharing work with another teacher.

·         Positive written comments on children's work

·         Regain Golden time or privileges.

Discouraging unacceptable behaviour.

There will be times when staff have to make it absolutely clear that a pupil's behaviour is unacceptable. However the challenge is to find ways of communicating this clearly to show respect for the pupil whilst completely rejecting the behaviour. In other words, reject the behaviour, not the child. Pupil self esteem can be maintained if punishment is seen to be fair.

This is done by:

  • Rewarding positive behaviour.

  • Verbal check/reprimand.

  • Disapproving look.

  • Moving work place within class or elsewhere.

  • Explaining the consequences ie. If you run you could have an accident.

  • Temporary loss of privileges.

  • Loss of Golden Time for up to 15 minutes

  • Moving names/pegs onto sad faces/ blue moons/ grey clouds.

  • Referral to class teacher, deputy headteacher, headteacher.

  • Parental involvement.

  • I.E.P. target.

  • Exclusion for lunch break.

  • Fixed period or permanent exclusion.

When pupil behaviour presents a serious danger of causing significant harm to themselves, to others or to property, or there is a major threat to good order, approved staff may need to take physical control until such time as the pupil is able to take back control for themselves. See also Policy for Restraint.

Monitoring and evaluation

Monitoring and evaluation will be conducted by the Headteacher and Leadership and Management Team.

The success of this policy will be measured through monitoring responses from both Pupil and parental Questionnaires. Our ultimate goal is that 100% of children are happy in school and that 100% of parents feel that children are well behaved in school.
